125 Years

Oct. 18, 1899

There will be a game of football played at Piqua Friday afternoon between the Sidney and Piqua high school football teams.

There will be a reception in honor of Mrs. William Jennings Bryan at the home of the Misses Robertson Friday afternoon to which all the ladies are cordially invited.

After this date, all parties are forbidden to dump any more garbage on south Miami avenue. No permits will be issued to any person dumping the contents of privy vaults in the river, but on the other hand will be prosecuted. – Health Officer.

100 Years

Oct. 18, 1924

Safety Director Brackney has announced that “Stop” signs will be painted upon the streets at several of the dangerous intersections in the city, including Main/North, Ohio/North, Poplar/West, Court/Miami, and Fair avenue corner. Signals must be heeded or prosecutions will follow.

Don’t forget to come to Sidney Saturday afternoon to see Van’s Dog and Pony Show on the corner of Main and Poplar. The business men of Sidney have secured these people as a little surprise for you and hope you will show your appreciation by bringing your trade to Sidney.

Botkins will play at Anna this week at the Frank Fogt grounds which are being scraped and put in good condition.

75 Years

50 Years

Oct. 18, 1974

Tawawa Park was the scene of some frantic activity this morning when a car plunged down a steep embankment of the roadway and landed on its top. A Sidney Fire Department pumper was dispatched to the scene and attempted to move the side of the roadway to allow a wrecker through. The pumper also started sliding down the hiss after the roadway gave away. Fire Chief Lyle Baker said 4,500 pounds of water were going to be pumped out of the 27,500 pound pumper before it was hoisted back onto the roadway.

The Sidney Planning Commission last week recommended the hiring of a municipal urban planner whose major initial function would be to update the city’s comprehensive plan, last compiled in 1957. Addition of a city planner would make the commission a more efficient body to cope with the demands of the steadily growing city.

25 Years

Oct. 18, 1999

Longtime Sidney resident James H. Daniel was recently re-elected in his unopposed bid for a seventh term as president of the Ohio Conference of NAACP Branches. With this term, he has served longer than anyone previously had as president. Daniel has been employed at Copeland Corp. for the last 33 years and currently serves as manager of safety and training.

PIQUA – Edison Community College will offer a class on Photoshop, a full-featured photo editing software package, beginning Oct. 27.
