ANNA – Quite a bit of excitement occurred Monday afternoon when a Ford car occupied by a couple of boy tourists hit the automobile of Miss Bernandine Lenhart as she crossed the Dixie at the main St. crossing. Tourists and others on the Dixie have the idea they can travel at any speed through our small towns without regard to the rights of others at the crossing.

Forty thousand people opened the 89th Shelby county fair Sunday, and on every side was the pronouncement that this year’s exposition was the biggest and best in history.

Salty exponents of the buggy-whip fraternity were in complete control of the stabled area of the local fairgrounds today as they prepared to fulfill assignments on the speed program of the county’s annual September festival during the cur- rent week. All told, $6,000 has been equitably apportioned for distribution to the winners of the 24 heats for the piebald field of trotters and pacers.

A tentative agreement has been reached between the Gartland Haswell Foundry, 430 W. Park St., and striking members of International Association of Machinists Local 2167 on a new three-year contract. Operations at the Sidney plant have been at a standstill for more than three months.

New offices next to the East Court Street Shelby County Education Building are just about finished and look bright and modern. The light paneling and spanking new surroundings will make a nice atmosphere in which to work. Some of the offices are already getting a personal touch with a tiny artificial flower arrangement on one desk, cactus plants in another room and sophisticated door name plaques.

Sidney School Supt. Roger McGee has received a check from the Sidney Sunset Kiwanis club for a speech and hearing therapy program held in Sidney schools last summer. The club raised money to help defray program expenses by sponsoring a pancake day.

The new Fairlawn Schools superintendent, Steven Mascho, has brought items and memorabilia from home to decorate his office and in doing this he has created a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere. This is just one of the methods he plans on using to promote and initiate changes throughout the district. By creating an approachable environment, he hopes the students, parents and staff will feel comfortable enough to discuss any problems or ideas, making it easier to meet the goals and expectations of the district. “Openness is going to become a norm for the administration,” he said. He replaces Tom Coyne, who is now superintendent of London City Schools.

Sidney City Council Monday night will hold a public hearing and introduce an ordinance concerning the rezoning of more than five acres along the north side of Hoewisher Road between Wapakoneta Avenue and Foxcross Drive. Developer Joe Sturm has requested the rezoning of 3.424 acres from R-1 single-family residential to R-2 single- and two- family residential. He also wants 1.2 acres rezoned from R-1 to B-2 com- munity business. The request represents a com- promise between Sturm and residents of the Eagle Glen Subdivision. Sturm’s earlier request involved more land and some multi-family zoning. Sturm is planning to build 10 duplexes and a professional office building on the land.
