Sept. 27, 1899

Joe Ford, who went to the Klondike gold fields last spring, has returned home.

Ed McVey is removing all the old machinery from his laundry and replacing it with new laundry machinery.

100 Years Ago

Sept. 27, 1924

The newly organized high school band gave a parade about the city before the football game between the Sidney and Piqua high school teams.

The purse for the person making the nearest correct guess on the amount of gasoline consumed by the Nash car which was run for 40 hours at an average rate of five miles per hour, the contest conducted by the E.B. Murray Nash Company, was awarded to Charles Adder, of Piqua. His guess was 14 gallons and 11/2 pints. The actual amount consumed was 14 gallons and 3 pints.

Pete Freeman, the popular Johnson oil man and champion sun- flower grower of Jackson Center, has a sunflower stock that measures 14 feet 21/2 inches from the ground or from the top down, either way you measure it. It has a sunflower on it that has a corresponding bust measure.

75 Years Ago

Sept. 27, 1949

The majority of Sidney stores will continue to close on Thursday after- noon with the exception of the Thursdays in December preceding Christmas. This was established Tuesday during a meeting in the Civic association office. Ernest B. Keiser, manager of Uhlman’s department store, said his store would remain open on Thursday afternoon. L.R. Oller, Jack Rhees, and Roy Blackston are to arrange for the housing of the 5,000 out-of-town Eagles and their wives who are expected to come to Sidney.

Sept. 27, 1974

Rumors of a “gas war” developing in Dayton have been circulating in recent weeks and Sidney appears to be following a similar pattern. On Ohio 47 near the interchange, several stations have large signs advertising their gasoline prices. The same stations which a short time ago lacked sufficient amounts of the product to service all their customers are now trying to sell as much gasoline as possible. One way of promoting sales is to lower prices.

While it has been a matter of concern whose responsibility it is to maintain and police the court square – the City of Sidney or Shelby County – the question now is which entity actually owns the property.

25 Years Ago

Sept. 27, 1999

The September meeting of Child Guidance Club was held at the home of Lisa Kerrigan, with Kelly Staudt and Deb Zimmerman serving as co-hostesses. President Elaine Sargeant opened the meeting with the intro- duction of new members Karen Baker, Sandy Beer, Erin Harvey, Annette Lochard, Darlene McClain, Melissa McDonald, Kelly Rees, Kristy Sherman, Tisha Simpson and Janelle Thompson. Officers for the 1999-2000 year are: president, Elaine Sargeant; vice president, Julie Edelen; secretary, Jean Freytag; and treasurer, Kathy Westerheide. The next meeting will be Oct. 21 at the home of Vickie Given. Jan Stroh will present the program “Redirecting Children’s Behavior.”

HOUSTON Billie Miller – served as hostess when the Ladies Aid Society of the Houston Congregational Christian Church held its September meeting. President Bertha Ganger opened the meeting with Ruth Evalyn Heins reading devotions. Brenda Martz was welcomed as a new member. Seven members answered roll call by telling of their best vacation spot. Cheer person Billie Miller reported sending cards to Blanche Dill, Irma Pence, Marilyn Thompson, Margaret Bailey, Gertrude Roeth, Dale Helman, Bill Cowan and Marjorie and Griffis Ginther. Jim Ostrander was also remembered during his illness. Ruth Evalyn Heins won the drawing for the mystery package. Brenda Martz served as auctioneer when a few items were brought in to be sold. Lois Pitsenbarger will serve as hostess when the Ladies Aid Society meets Oct. 6. New members are welcome. Each member is asked to bring a wrapped pound of any- thing for auction.
