SIDNEY — The Sidney Yellow Jackets gave Tippecanoe its first league loss 2-1 on Wednesday at Sidney High School in a Miami Valley League matchup.

“We talked about playing as a cohesive unit and playing for each other,” Sidney head coach Kevin Veroneau said. “Today we stepped up the work rate and intensity. You could actually see the passion and desire to compete.”

The Yellow Jackets (10-5-1, 7-1-0) got out to a 1-0 lead late in the first half when Larkyn Vordemark redirected a corner kick into the back of the net with 11:30 left.

Sidney was able to prevent any Tippecanoe threats for a good chunk of time in the second half and even added a goal from Tessa Curl to extend its lead to 2-0.

“That goal came because we looked across the field, saw a player breaking and hit her early,” Veroneau said. “This is something we’ve been talking about all season. We can see it in practice but we’ve been waiting for the moment they bring it to the game.”

Tippecanoe was held scoreless until just over a minute left in the match when it cut the Yellow Jackets lead to 2-1 in a chaotic sequence.

With Wednesday’s victory, Sidney’s fate lies in the hands of the team they just beat, Tippecanoe. The Red Devils will play Butler next Wednesday and there are two scenarios for the Yellow Jackets.

If Butler wins, the Aviators are lone champions of the MVL. If Tippecanoe is victorious, the three teams share the title.

“It seems like every year it comes down to that final Butler-Tipp game,” Veroneau said. “You never know who’s going to show up at each game.”

Sidney has one more regular season game on Wednesday when they take on Greenville at Sidney in another MVL matchup at 7 p.m.
