125 Years

Oct. 7, 1899

The entrance of the Wagner house lobby has been greatly improved by the placing of several incandescent electric lights over the doors.

A pair of boots worn by George Kraft while he was at Cape Nome, Alaska, are on exhibition at Montanus’ shoe store.

Work of remodeling the Big Four depot was begun yesterday. The depot will be raised and moved back, a furnace, gas and electric lights will be put in.

100 Years

Oct. 7, 1924

Miss Emma Graham and Miss Mildred Ginn went to Columbus Tuesday to attend the Library Convention in session there.

Lieut. Lansdonne, who is in command of the giant dirigible, Shenandoah, which left Lakehurst, N.J., Tuesday for its long trip to the Pacific coast, has sent word to his old home folks at Greenville that the giant ship will fly over that city at about 6 o’clock this evening. The ship may possibly be seen over Sidney this evening.

75 Years

Oct. 7, 1949

A site for the location of the proposed public library in Jackson Center has been offered as a gift to the village by A.W. Davis, now of Florida and formerly of Jackson Center. It is directly across from the Jackson Center school buildings.

Sidney Police Chief William O’Leary issued a warning today to all youths prone to playing destructive Halloween pranks. Chief O’Leary stated that any youths caught in the act of maliciously destroying property or otherwise disturbing the peace are liable to juvenile court action.

Sidney’s new Pastime skating rink opened Tuesday night. Skaters will have 9,000 square feet of floor space over which to glide to the recorded music of Glen Davis and Ken Griffin.

50 Years

Oct. 7, 1974

An air monitoring program recently conducted here by the Ohio EPA has revealed that 13 sample days in the past three months, Sidney air quality exceeds EPA standards each day.

In the wake of President Ford’s decision Friday to halt U.S. grain exports to the Soviet Union, local grain farmers are facing a market situation that might make July’s drought seem like a picnic. Richard Regula, manager of Landmark Grain Elevator, Vandemark Road, reported that since Ford’s decision, grain markets in Chicago have plummeted the full limit. Trading today, he added, was at a complete standstill.

25 Years

Oct. 7, 1999

ANNA – State liquor control agents closed Joe’s Place, 320 W. Main St., and cited the owner and bartender Wednesday afternoon, saying the bar did not have a current liquor permit. Owner Harold Schmidt of Sidney was cited for failing to have a valid permit and bartender Tom Strunk was cited for illegal sales of alcohol. Both were summoned into Sidney Municipal Court next week.

Rose was in town to give a motivational speech to about 180 members of the CMA only. He would not give any interviews or sign autographs. Rose spoke about the importance of winning, giving the best every day, enjoying work and recognizing what is needed to become successful.
