October 13, 1891

An exhibition of subduing vicious horses and training those unbroken was given last evening by Jesse Berry, who may rightfully be said to be a master in the work. It was a first in a series of lessons that will be given before classes interested in horses. His work was observed by nearly 100 persons.

100 Years Ago

October 13, 1916

Results of the straw vote taken in Sidney last week by the Cincinnati Enquirer, shows Wilson, Cox and Pomerene strong favorites in the city. Of the approximately 450 straw votes counted: Wilson had a lead of 113 over Hughes; Cox 58 votes over Willis, and Pomerene, 30 over Herrick.

George Level, who was found unconscious along the Big Four Tracks earlier this week, died in St. Elizabeth Hospital at Dayton this morning. He was removed there two days ago. He never regained consciousness .

L.M. Studevant, of Sidney, was named first vice-president during the 28th annual convention of the Ohio Building Association League held in Akron.

75 Years Ago

October 13, 1941

William Milligan, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.F. Milligan, of Sidney, has enrolled at Hiram College for his freshman year. He plans to enter into the study of law.

Since Sidney has recently been declared a prime defense area. Private construction which does not require large quantities of critical materials is not banned, according to word received here today from Washington.

Joe L. Updegraff, Kossuth street is in Wilson Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries received in an auto accident last evening. He received a dislocated knee and multiple cuts and abrasions, when his car went off the Dixie highway as he was starting to pass another vehicle south of Sidney.

50 Years Ago

October 13, 1966

The Shelby County Extension Homemakers Council met September 27 in the court house. The president, Mrs. Fred Steinke, announced the date of Tuesday December 6, for the Christmas Open House. It will be held in the basement of the St. Paul’s United Church of Christ. Chairman for the event are Mrs. Melvin Regula and Mrs. Virgil Weaver.

Richard McCasland, treasurer of the Sidney Daily News, will speak on “Unit Record Equipment “ at the 19th annual meeting of the Institute of Newspaper Controllers and Finance Officers. More than 200 executives of newspapers throughout the United States and Canada will attend the convention which will be held Oct. 22-26 in the Queen Elizabeth Hotel, Montreal, Canada.

October 13, 1991

EAST LIVERPOOL, Ohio (AP) Martin Sheen posted $250 ball after he and 32 other protestors were arrested for climbing a fence around a hazardous waste incinerator under construction. “I don’t look forward to this kind of activity, but you do what has to be done”, the actor said after being freed Sunday.

Jerry Harrod and Ralph Boss recently displayed the Marine Corps Flag in preparation for the third Western Ohio Marine Corps Birthday Party. The annual party for Marine veterans will be held Nov. 10 at the Sidney Holiday Inn. About 150 people attended last year’s event.
