November 21, 1891

The subject of sidewalks, like the poor, is always with us. New residents who have come with the several flourishing industries that are an important part of Sidney, express great satisfaction with everything about the town except its sidewalks. It is unfortunate for Sidney that too many people have no desire for good walks and it is exasperating to know that council resolutions on the question have no force.

No longer need we go to the trouble and expense of a long and tedious journey to Saratoga Springs, New York. We have now, in this city, the best mineral water that Saratoga produces. Mr. William Shine, of this city, has perfected arrangements with the famous Excelsior Springs of Saratoga, so that by a very ingenious and interesting process, he sells on draught this famous water at the very moderate prices of five cents per glass advt.

100 Years

November 21, 1916

The Democrats of Kettlersville and vicinity held a big jollification at that place last night. There was a big parade and plenty of fireworks. After the parade, H.H. Needles made a short address. Several automobile loads from Sidney were present for the occasion.

Henziger and Short have taken the agency for the Studebaker auto in this city, succeeding C.F. Babcock, who has been promoted to the general agency for this section. Their headquarters will be at Knupp’s garage.

75 Years

November 21, 1941

Dr. Brent A. Welch, former practicing physician here, has been promoted from first lieutenant to captain in the U.S. Army medical corps. He is presently stationed at Fort Hayes in Columbus.

Formal opening of the newly remodeled offices of the Welfare Finance Corp., 116 South Main Avenue, will be held Saturday it was announced today by Leo Brandewie, manager of the local office.

Yellow Jackets traded moleskins and headgears for court attire this week as basketball practice got underway at Sidney High School. Thirty prospects were on hand, when Coach Harold Brown called the initial practice session. Three lettermen are in this group, including Dick Henke, Frank Warbington and Wilbur Johnston. The season will open November 30 against Coldwater.

50 Years

November 21, 1966

FORT LORAMIE – Among those who attended the Johnny Gilbert Show Friday were Mrs. Joseph Sanders, Mrs. Adolph Eilerman, Mrs. Julius Henke, Mrs. F.J. Raterman, Miss Eleanor Fleckenstein and Mrs. Frank Seger.

Last minute checks were being made on the completely new decorations for the business area in preparation for the Christmas season in Sidney which officially gets underway Friday, November 25. Throughout the business district, workmen have been stringing wires and attaching brackets to poles for the decorations purchased by the retail division of the chamber of commerce. Under the guidance of Lee Kaufman, president of the retail division of the chamber, Santa will turn on the lights for the all new Christmas decorations as representatives from the retailers present them to the city and county.

25 Years

November 21, 1991

The Shelby County chapter of the American Red Cross is ready to launch its unique service vehicle- the ARC. The chapter leaders, along with Alice Watts, purchased a damaged mobile library vehicle (referred to lovingly as a Bookmoblie) and turned it into a rescue and service vehicle. It will be used to aid firefighters at the scene of fires and other disasters. Norris Davidson was the chairman of the committee overseeing the project.

A local library is getting a special reading room. The Stallo Memorial Library in Minster staff has announced the library has been remodeled to create a story telling room for young people.
