November 23, 1891

Henry C. Wilson, of Turtle Creek Township, who went to Alaska last May and was a teacher in a government school on the Island of the Prince of Wales, arrived home this morning. He dismissed his school on October 31 and since that date traveled continuously, 21 days until he reached Sidney.

It has been suggested by various residents that the electric lights should be turned on earlier in the evening. They now appear at 6:30. It is as dark as midnight before that hour. The light is needed.

The growing village of Anna has complained to the officials of the C.H. & D. railway to the high rate of speed of trains through the town. The engineers have been cautioned not to exceed 15 miles an hour.

100 years

November 23, 1916

Fort Loramie was the scene of a big jollification last night when almost the entire populace of that village celebrated the re-election of President Wilson. Following the parade through the streets, there was a dance held at Brucken’s hall.

The ladies of the Presbyterian Church served about 300 people at their annual Thanksgiving turkey dinner at the church last evening. The ladies also realized a nice sum from their bazaar.

75 Years

November 23, 1941

By order of the mayor, “no turn” signs were placed at the intersections of Poplar Street and Ohio and Main Avenues this morning. Chief of Police William O’Leary said the signs were put up on an experimental basis and will be in operation on Saturdays only unless council passes an ordinance to make them permanent.

Two octogenarians of the county have purchased their hunting licenses this week. John Brackney, 85, northeast of Anna, purchased his at Anna Hardware and E.J. Griffis, Sidney businessman, secured his from Wally Sachs.

50 Years

November 23, 1966

Fall flowers and turkeys, reminders of the approaching Thanksgiving holiday, were used in the appointments used for the fall pledging service of the Alpha Beta Chapter, Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority. The ceremony was held in the home of Mrs. Carl Henson.

The new pledges included Mrs. George Benson, elementary music teacher; Mrs. Eugene Carper, kindergarten teacher at Longfellow School and Mrs. Gene Eggleston, business education teacher at Sidney High School.

Room rates at Wilson Memorial Hospital will increase December 1 Administrator Vincent Gallagher said today.

The increase will be $4 for a private and semi-private room and $3 for three and four bed rooms. Total cost of semi-private rooms will rise from $16 – $20 to $20 – $24 and multiple bedroom rates will advance from $16 – $19 to $19 – $22.

Wilson Memorial Hospital is unique in that it receives no financial assistance from either city or county. Costs must be met with revenue from patients or third persons with whom the patient contracts for hospital service benefits, the administrator said.

November 23, 1991

The Common Pleas Court judge has ruled in the case of two local property owners who had sued the City of Sidney. Judge John D. Schmitt granted a motion for summary judgment filed by the city against Marilyn Briggs and Emma Cornett. The ladies claimed the city was responsible for water damage caused by rains which flooded their homes. The court ruled the city was immune from suit based on a statute passed by the General Assembly.

It is a news story which will not go away. Sidney resident Stacy Arthur, the reigning Mrs. Ohio who was the Playboy centerfold of the month for January. Since then, her husband was murdered in broad daylight in downtown Bellefontaine on October 29th. She is now scheduled for a feature live interview with the television show, Hard Copy. There is also speculation the murder was part of a botched kidnapping plot.
