JACKSON CENTER — One person is dead and another injured as a result of a house fire which erupted early Thursday morning.

At approximately 4:54 a.m., Nov. 24, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting a house fire with a person trapped inside at 16041 Pasco-Montra Road, near here. Shelby County Sheriff’s deputies and fire and rescue units were dispatched.

According to a release from the sheriff’s office, the first unit arrived within six minutes and found the house totally engulfed. A person from the residence was taken by emergency medical service personnel to Wilson Health in Sidney for treatment of injuries sustained in the fire. The person’s identity and condition were not available at press time.

Once the fire was brought under control, firefighters located another victim, deceased, in the home.

The body of the deceased was taken to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office. An autopsy has been ordered by the Shelby County coroner to determine the victim’s identity and cause of death.

Responding fire and EMS units were the Jackson Center, Anna, Van Buren Township, and Botkins fire departments and Anna EMS. Additional tankers from the Maplewood, Port Jefferson and Minster fire departments took water to the scene. The state fire marshal was called and reportedly arrived on the scene in the early afternoon. Firefighters and others remained there until almost 3 p.m.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is in the early stages, the sheriff’s office release said. No origin or cause had been determined by press time. Shelby County Sheriff’s Office detectives, the Sidney-Shelby County Fire Investigation Unit, the Shelby County Coroner’s Office and the state fire marshal are conducting a joint investigation.

“Jackson Center is a close-knit community. This is not only a tragedy to the family, but the community as a whole,” said Jackson Center Fire Chief Jerry Davis in the release.
