WAPAKONETA — A Minster man involved in a standoff with Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office deputies has pleaded guilty to one felony count of inducing panic, a fifth-degree felony.

James W. Hoskins, 38, of Minster, appeared in Auglaize County Common Pleas Court Wednesday to enter his guilty plea. He will pay restitution of more than $11,000 for the cost of the departments who responded to the standoff on May 3 at the rural home on state Route 119, just outside Minster.

He was released on his own recognizance. He cannot consume alcohol or drugs, cannot be near weapons and must take his medication as prescribed as part of the conditions for his release from jail.

A pre-sentence investigation will be held.

The standoff began May 3 at 12:30 p.m. when the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call about a man with a gun who was held up in a house east of Minster on state Route 119. They had also received information that there might be some type of explosives at the residence.

Other agencies assisting at the scene were Minster and New Bremen Police, the Minster Area Life Squad and Fire Department, St. Marys Police, The Ohio State Highway Patrol, The Auglaize County Emergency Management Agency, Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and the Allen County Sheriff’s Office. The West Ohio Regional Homeland Security Emergency Management Lighting and Command mobile unit was on the scene also.

A handgun and knives were located along with several items that had been made to appear to be explosives, said Auglaize County Sheriff Al Solomon. There were no actual explosives found, he said.

He surrendered approximately four hours after the standoff began.

Hoskins was indicted by the Auglaize County grand jury on one charge of inducing panic, a fourth-degree felony and appeared in court on May 12 for arraignment. The charge was reduced to a fifth-degree felony in a plea agreement.
