Career Exploration Academy looking for volunteers

SIDNEY — The Workforce Partnership of Shelby County is looking for volunteers to assist them with their upcoming Career Exploration Academy.

The mission of the academy is to promote their partners’ careers with Shelby County students in a personal way. Students will hear first-hand about careers from the person actually living that career. They hope to help the students begin to better understand careers in the real-world, not just from a text book or brochure. The students are given the opportunity to select the careers they will learn about.

They also wish to connect the students to the partners personally, so that future job-shadowing, internships and post high school career opportunities begin to cultivate.

The academy will be held on Sept. 22 and 23 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Shelby County Fairgrounds.

There will be three sessions both mornings and afternoons (total of six per day). The Workforce Partnership welcomes assistance in any way, however, it will be much easier to organize if volunteers are able to help during an entire morning schedule (8:30-11:20 a.m.), p.m. schedule (11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.) or the full day. Volunteers can help one day or both, whichever works best.

The volunteer’s primary responsibilities will be to help with logistics like directing parking/registration in the morning, keeping the activities on schedule, guiding the students between sessions, general oversight of sessions to help ensure good behavior, and serving lunch.

You can sign up with Dawn Eilert at the Sidney-Shelby County Chamber of Commerce at 937-492-9122, or Deb McDermott at the Workforce Partnership of Shelby County at 937-498-9554.
