Staff report

Volleyball teams from outside the county found out just how good volleyball is inside the county Saturday in five Southwest District Sectional Tournament championship games played at three different locations.

All five county teams in action Saturday were victorious, and all five will now have a week off before playing for a district championship Saturday.

Heading Saturday’s action were upset wins by Anna, Russia and Lehman. Favored Jackson Center and Fort Loramie both won 3-0.

Division 3

Anna 3, Waynesville 0

BROOKVILLE — Anna was playing in the D-3 sectional finals Saturday and was matched against the No.3 seed in Waynesville, which came into the game with a 22-2 record.

But it was no contest, with the fifth-seeded Lady Rockets rolling to a 25-13, 25-11, 25-19 victory to up their record to 16-10 on the year. They will now face the team that was top-seeded in the Mariemont Sectional, Williamsburg, which goes into Saturday’s district final with a 22-1 mark.

The two teams will play at Northmont High School on Saturday at 3 p.m., with the winner advancing to the regional tournament.

Krista Gehret once again led the Lady Rockets with 17 kills and both Kennedey Glover and Emma Meyer had seven apiece.

Lexi Wells had 32 assists, Rachel Shoemaker 13 digs and Carly Becker 10 digs.

Division 4

Russia 3, S’eastern 1

TROY — Russia continued its tournament run with its second upset win in a row Saturday.

In the semifinals, the No. 9-seeded Lady Raiders defeated fifth-seeded Riverside. Then on Saturday in the sectional finals, they toppled third-seeded Southeastern 3-1.

The scores were 25-22, 23-25, 25-14, 25-23, and the win put the Lady Raiders in the district championship game with a 14-11 record.

They are now matched up against county rival Lehman on Saturday in a district championship game at Troy at 5 p.m. Lehman owns a 3-1 win over the Lady Raiders during the regular season.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better game,” said Russia coach Aaron Watkins. “We had to earn every point tonight. The girls stepped up when they needed to, and it’s a huge confidence boost for them.”

Cameo Wilson had 18 kills and Laurissa Poling added 14 kills for Russia. Wilson also had nine digs, and Poling seven blocks and four aces.

Chris Gaerke added eight kills and Morgan Wenrick seven.

Whitney Pleiman came up big, with 34 digs and eight service aces.

Jenna Cordonnier had 40 asists, seven digs and four blocks, Lexi Monnin had 12 digs, Chloe Sherman 11 digs and Katie Swartz seven digs.

Jackson Center 3, EC 0

TROY — Top-seeded and No. 1-ranked Jackson Center breezed to another sectional title Saturday, beating Emmanuel Christian 3-0.

The scores were 25-6, 25-15, 25-11 and the win put the Lady Tigers at 25-0 and into the district championship game again. They will meet Cincinnati Christian on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Troy High School, with the winner advancing on to the regional tournament the following week.

Cassie Meyer had 15 kills and five aces for the Lady tigers, Alicia Kessler had nine kills and both Camryn Hoehne and Raquel Kessler had six kills apiece.

Kamryn Elchert finished with 30 assists and seven digs, Christen Ware had eight digs and Vanessa Winner seven digs and three aces.

Lehman 3, SCC 2

ARCANUM — Everyone in the Arcanum High School gym knew the ball was coming to Sidney Chapman.

But stopping the Lehman senior with a sectional title on the line in the fifth set Saturday in Arcanum D-4 sectional final action was a different matter.

Chapman had a sideout to give Lehman a 14-11 lead, then put the nail in the Irish’s coffin with a kill on match point — the 39th of the match for the Lehman all-time kill leader — to finish off a 3-2 upset win, the scores being 22-25, 25-18, 25-19, 23-25, 15-12.

Lehman, 15-10, will play Russia in the Troy district finals Saturday at 5 p.m., with a regional berth on the line.

“It’s a lot of pressure,” Chapman said. “But I want the ball in those situations. I enjoy the challenge.”

Lehman had let a 20-18 lead get away in the fourth set and a 10-5 lead in the fifth set had turned into a 10-10 tie with Chapman in the back row. When Lehman was up 10-5, Chapman was two rotations from being back in the front row.

That’s when Lauren Larger made her two biggest swings of the season, giving Lehman a 12-10 lead and putting Chapman in position to finish the match off.

Along with her hitting, Chapman had three aces, while Scott had 12 kills, Schutt had 11, Malorie Hussey had six and Larger added five.

Lauren McFarland had 30 assists and Alexis Snipes dished out 27, while Madison Hussey added 15 digs.

And the win was validation for the Lady Cavs, who lost to Catholic Central the first week of the season.

Loramie 3, Covington 0

ARCANUM — Fort Loramie advanced to the district finals with a 3-0 win over Covington in a close match at Arcanum.

The second-seeded Lady Redskins won 25-20, 25-20, 25-16 to go to 17-8 on the year, and they will now play Miami Valley Christian in the district championship game Saturday at Troy at 7 p.m., with the winner heading to the regional tournament at Brookville.

“We played well at times today, but give credit to Lonnie (Cain, Covington coach),” said Loramie coach John Rodgers. “He had his team ready to go and they played hard throughout. We now have a full week to work on consistency and staying aggressive whistle to whistle.”

Caleigh Barhorst had 15 kills, Abby Holthaus nine and Sara Stang and Maeve Hilgefort seven apiece. Sophia Albers set them up with 32 assists.

Defensively, Barhorst had 19 digs, Stang 13 and Taylor Ernst nine.
