Turnovers plague Lady Jackets in loss

CENTERVILLE — Sidney stayed with Centerville for about a half but the turnovers continued to pile up. And the Lady Jackets were unable to stay with the Lady Elks in a 51-20 loss in Greater Western Ohio Conference crossover basketball action Thursday.

The loss drops the Lady Jackets to 1-2 on the season heading into a game Wednesday at Tipp City.

“They used pressure defense and I was proud of the girls for staying with them for a half,” said Sidney coach Megan Mummey. “We took care of the ball pretty well in the first half. But we ended up with 35 turnovers and you’re not going to win games doing that.”

Sidney trailed 24-15 at the half and managed only five points over the final two periods. Celena Taborn led Sidney with eight points.

Indian Lake 62, Fairlawn 36

INDIAN LAKE — The Fairlawn girls dropped to 0-3 on the season after losing on the road to Indian Lake 62-36 in non-league girls basketball Thursday.

Fairlawn returns to action Tuesday at home against Mississinawa. Lake is now 2-1.

Only three players scored for the Lady Jets. Freshman McCalla Huelskamp led the way with 15, Lauren Dudgeon had 12 and Madison Pierce added nine.

St. Marys 60, NK 40

ST. MARYS — New Knoxville went on the road and dropped a 60-40 verdict to St. Marys in non-league girls basketball action Thursday.

The Lady Rangers are 1-2 after the loss and return to action Tuesday at Houston.

It was just 25-18 at the half, but the Laday Rangers fell behind 44-28 after three quarters and couldn’t recover.

Keizie Schroer had 16 to lead Knoxville and Jenna Schwieterman added 15.

Botkins 61, Fairlawn 27

The Botkins Lady Trojans continue to get their basketball season off to a strong start, winning their second in a row Tuesday night.

This one came in the County opener at Fairlawn, and Botkins emerged with a 61-27 victory to go to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in league play.

Fairlawn dropped to 0-2 and 0-1.

Botkins rolled to a 25-11 lead after one quarter and never looked back. The Lady Trojans led 45-21 after three periods.

Paige Lane led Botkins with 15 points, hitting 3-for-7 from three-point range. Sarah Bergman added 13 to go with nine rebounds. Grace Homan had four assists and six rebounds, and Lane added three assists.

Fairlawn’s Lauren Dudgeon was the game’s leading scorer with 16.
