GREENVILLE — Sidney let a double-digit lead early in the final period slip away, but survived a last-second shot by Greenville to pull out a 62-60 victory in Greater Western Ohio Conference boys basketball action Friday.

The game served to show how tough a time the fourth-seeded Yellow Jackets will have in their tournament opener — the two teams will meet again Saturday night at 8 p.m. at Trotwood in the first round of the Division 1 Sectional.

Sidney goes into that game with a 17-5 record and finishes 13-2 in the American North. Greenville will come into the game at 13-8.

Sidney jumped out on top from the start and led 21-12 after one quarter, but the Jackets couldn’t pull away from the Green Wave, who pulled to within 36-31 at the half, and that was after Sidney scored the final four points of the quarter.

The game remained close through most of the third quarter, but when Andre Gordon sank a shot from half court as time expired, the Jackets were back out to a nine-point lead at 54-46.

The lead reached double figures when Sidney got the first two points of the final quarter, but Greenville got the next four. Sidney countered with a bucket, but Greenville charged back and took a 60-58 lead with the clock winding down to near a minute remaining.

Devan Rogers scored to tie it up, then Isaiah Bowser made one of two free throws for a 61-60 lead with exactly 1:00 remaining.

It came down to the final possession, with Greenville having it. The shot was off the mark and Gordon was fouled with just over a second remaining. He hit one and the Jackets came away with the win.

Gordon finished with 19, Ratez Roberts had 16 and Bowser added 13 for the Jackets.
