CLEVELAND (AP) — A steel distributor in Cleveland says the mill will suffer catastrophic harm if a judge doesn’t immediately order the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to dredge the Cuyahoga (ky-uh-HOH’-guh) River shipping channel.
The Plain Dealer in Cleveland reports (http://bit.ly/2d43Ymx ) ArcelorMittal says the steel mill could be forced to curtail or shut down its blast furnaces if the Army Corps fails to dredge this fall.
The corps isn’t commenting on the motion.
The agency is required to dredge the shipping channel and Cleveland Harbor. But it has failed to dredge this year while contesting a lawsuit.
A federal judge hasn’t decided whether to order the dredging. The Corps wants to dump river sediment it says isn’t toxic into Lake Erie. Ohio officials say that would harm the lake’s ecosystem.
